NMSU baseball falls 8-5 to South Dakota State in series finale

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The NM State Aggies lost their first game of the season today, Sunday, Feb. 18, in game three of their series against the Jackrabbits. The Aggies were in the lead for six innings until falling behind after a grand slam in the top of the ninth.  

Starting pitcher Hayden Lewis threw for six innings striking out nine batters and only walking one. He only allowed three hits and three runs. Matt Romero came into relief once Walker was taken out of the game.  

Cho Tofte was the next pitcher up and he pitched for 1.1 innings. With his time on the mound Tofte was able to hold the Jackrabbits to no runs. Tofte walked one batter and stuck out one.  

Hayden Lewis was chosen to close out the game in the top of the ninth. Unfortunately, he gave up five runs with only one earned run. Lewis only gave up three hits, striking out two hitters and walking one.  

The Aggies struggled in the batter’s box today as they were only able to notch one hit. The lone hit came from an RBI single hit by Nick Gore.  

The Aggies were able to excel in plate discipline as they would rack up 12 walks on the day. Three of the five runs the Aggies scored were earned, two RBIs from walks.  

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: 

  • The Aggies recorded a .975 fielding percentage as a team.

  • 16 different Aggies saw in game action.

  • Both Steve Solorzano and Titus Dumitru were hit by a pitch.

  • The Aggie pitchers struck out 14 batters.

  • Five of those strike outs were backward k’s

NM State returns to action at the ‘Skew Monday, Feb. 19 for their fourth game against South Dakota State. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
