EVERMAN − Stephenville spotted Everman a 21-0 lead in the first quarter Friday but roared back to beat the Bulldogs 62-61 on the final play of the game – a 15-yard TD pass from Ryder Lambert to Topher Foster.

“It was a broken play,” Stephenville coach Sterling Doty said. “(Lambert) scrambled, threw it back in the end zone. (Foster) got two feet in.”

The Yellow Jackets overcame four turnovers to win the non-district game.

“They’re a good football team,” Doty said of Everman. “We battled. Showed the heart of a champion.”

The defending Class 4A Division I champs, ranked No. 1 in the state, improved to 2-0 while Everman dropped to 1-1.

Lambert completed 16 of 34 passes for 257 yards and four TDs, while Tate Maruska ran for 311 yards and five TDs on 45 carries.

Foster had four catches for 54 yards and two TDs. Tristian Gentry had seven for 121 yards and a TD, and Tytus Russell also caught a TD pass.

But the Buckaroos (2-0) led 21-0 at halftime and outscored the Bobcats 14-8 in the third quarter.

“We handled the travel well, and we got up there and played decent,” Breckenridge coach Casey Pearce said. “We got after it pretty good.”

Pearce said the Bucks forced the Bobcats to punt a couple of times in the first half and also got some short drives thanks to Childress kicking game mistakes.

“We scored right before the half, and we got it back after halftime and took it down and scored again,” Pearce said. “That was good.”

Adrian Ruiz and Alejandro Franco each had TD catches for the Bucks.

The win sets up a showdown with another state-ranked team, Cisco (2-0), which is No. 7 in Class 2A Division I.

“We’re excited,” Pearce said. “We need to play the spoiler role, and we need to worry about us. If we worry about us, we’ve got a chance.

At Wall, Trenton Huston’s second touchdown run of the night, a 5-yarder with 6:08 left in the third quarter, lifted Cisco to an 18-14 victory over the Hawks in a non-district game.
