No. 17 Columbia City nips No. 10 Tigers at Warsaw golf sectional; Hoskins medalist

WARSAW – Columbia City, ranked 17th in the latest Indiana High School Golf Coaches Association boys poll, overcame a one-stroke deficit at the turn with an incoming 145 to capture the team title over host and 10th-ranked Warsaw in the high school sectional Friday at the par-70, 6,577-yard Rozella Ford Golf Club.

The Eagles had four golfers shoot in the 70s at the par-70, 6,577-yard Rozella Ford, led by Kam Hoag’s 4-over-par 74, and totaled 302, two strokes better than coach Jack Carpenter’s Tigers. Warsaw senior Cal Hoskins overcame a 3-over front-side 38 to post a 1-under 34 for a 2-over 72 to win medalist honors over Plymouth senior Bennett Christy.

“It’s survive and move on,” Carpenter said after the Eagles nosed out his Tigers. “It’s like the NCAA basketball tournament. When you have it on your home course, you hope you can walk away with a win. But Columbia City has some talented players. Obviously, it wasn’t our best day. Columbia City really played well on the back nine, and that made the difference.”

Hoskins, who is headed to Indiana University this fall, wasn’t feeling well at the beginning of the round but gritted it out for the low round of the day.

“I started pretty horrible today,” Hoskins said. “I was hitting it bad, trying to make bogeys and pars. Fortunately, I didn’t make any double bogeys – I made two 20-footers for bogeys. I wasn’t feeling the best. I just came out today and tried to give our team a chance to win.”

Warsaw also had four golfers finish in the 70s. Following Hoskins was Ben Brander (74), Jack Yeager (79) and Jaxson Gould (79).

The top three teams and top three individuals not on those teams advance to Thursday’s regional which will be played on the par-72, 7,026-yard Black Course at Swan Lake Resort in Plymouth.
