Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill made it a point before the season started that he wanted to be the first player in NFL history to record 2,000 receiving yards in a season.
And while he didn’t hit the mark, Hill still had an extraordinary season nonetheless.
Hill caught seven passes for 82 yards and one touchdown in the Dolphins’ 21-14 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday at Hard Rock Stadium to finish the season with an NFL-leading 1,799 receiving yards — the seventh-most in a single season in NFL history. He is the first player in Dolphins history to lead the NFL in receiving yards in a season.
To get to 2,000 yards, Hill would have needed at least 283 receiving yards against the Bills.
Calvin Johnson holds the NFL record for receiving yards in a season, with 1,964 over 16 games in the 2012 season. Cooper Kupp is the only other player in NFL history to ever eclipse the 1,900-yard receiving mark in a season, with 1,947 receiving yards over 17 games in 2021.
Four others had at least 1,800 receiving yards in a season: Julio Jones (1,871 in 2015), Jerry Rice (1,848 in 1995), Antonio Brown (1,834 in 2015) and Justin Jefferson (1,809 in 2022).
Milestones Tyreek Hill accomplished this season
While Hill missed on the 2,000-yard goal, he did have his share of feats this season, his second with the Dolphins.
Among them:
▪ Hill is the first player in NFL history to have multiple seasons with at least 1,700 receiving yards. His 1,799 yards this season are the most in a season in Dolphins history, breaking his own record of 1,710 set last season. Prior to Hill, no other Dolphins player ever logged more than 1,400 receiving yards in a season, let alone getting all the way up to 1,700 in back-to-back seasons. The previous receiving record before Hill was 1,389 by Mark Clayton in 1984.
▪ He became one of seven active NFL players with at least 10,000 receiving yards, joining Julio Jones, DeAndre Hopkins, Mike Evans, Travis Kelce, Davante Adams and Keenan Allan.
▪ He is one of three players with three consecutive seasons of at least 110 catches, joining Brown (2013-2015) and Wes Welker (2007-2009).
▪ Hill became the first wide receiver to make the Pro Bowl in each of his first eight seasons, and his eight consecutive selections are the second most by any active NFL player behind only Aaron Donald (10).
▪ Through his first eight NFL seasons, Hill has 717 catches, 10,139 receiving yards and 83 scrimmage touchdowns (76 receiving, seven rushing).
The 717 catches are the fourth most in NFL history through eight seasons, behind only Marvin Harrison (759), Hopkins (747) and Brown (733). The 10,139 receiving yards are sixth behind Julio Jones (10,731), Torry Holt (10,675), Johnson (10,405), Rice (10,273) and Randy Moss (10,147). The scrimmage touchdowns are tied with Harrison and Terrell Owens for third by a receiver through eight seasons.
