Recap: No. 20 KU football falls to Oklahoma 52-42 in Norman

NORMAN, Okla. — Kansas football and Oklahoma matched up Saturday in another Big 12 Conference contest.

The No. 20 Jayhawks came in after a 38-31 loss against TCU. The Sooners came in after a 49-0 loss against Texas. Last season, Oklahoma pulled out a 35-23 win against Kansas.

Did coach Lance Leipold’s Jayhawks squad rebound from its first defeat of the season? Did coach Brent Venables’ Sooners capture its first conference victory of the season? Kansas could position itself well in the Big 12 title race with a win.

Here's what happened at Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium:

FINAL: Oklahoma 52, Kansas 42

The Jayhawks couldn't get the onside kick, and the Sooners ran out the clock.

Kansas cuts into the deficit with a touchdown

The Jayhawks now trail 52-42 with 3:31 left in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Jason Bean hit tight end Mason Fairchild for a nine-yard touchdown pass, and then Kansas hit the ensuing extra point to trail by just 10 points now. The drive lasted seven plays and 75 yards and took 1:47 off of the clock.

Oklahoma hits a field goal

The Sooners extended their lead ever so slightly, hitting a 37-yard field goal with 5:18 left in the fourth quarter. Oklahoma now leads 52-35. The drive lasted 16 plays and 55 yards and took 5:15 off of the clock.

Kansas turns a turnover into points

The Jayhawks capitalized on this opportunity, and wound up scoring on a one-yard touchdown run by running back Ky Thomas. That capped off a drive that went 28 yards in seven plays and took 3:36 off of the clock. The extra point cut Oklahoma's lead to 49-35 with 10:33 left in the fourth quarter.

Oklahoma turns the ball over again

Sooners quarterback Dillon Gabriel appeared to lose control of the ball again, this time while trying to throw a pass. Jayhawks defensive end Hayden Hatcher recovered it. Kansas took over at the Oklahoma 28 yard line with 14:09 left in the fourth quarter.

END 3Q: Oklahoma 49, Kansas 28

Oklahoma goes back up 21 points

The Sooners are now up 49-28 with 2:36 left in the third quarter. An extra point followed another touchdown pass for Oklahoma quarterback Dillon Gabriel, this one a 26-yard throw to tight end Brayden Willis. The drive went 75 yards in 10 plays and took 3:20 off of the clock.

Kansas finds the end zone again

This time Kansas made the most of an Oklahoma turnover, and drove down the field for a touchdown. Quarterback Jason Bean hit wide receiver Lawrence Arnold for a 28-yard touchdown pass, and after the extra point the Sooners' lead is now 42-28 with 5:56 left in the third quarter. The Jayhawks' drive went 47 yards in three plays and took 00:53 off of the clock.

Kenny Logan Jr. picks off a pass

The Jayhawks have forced another turnover defensively. This time, safety Kenny Logan Jr. intercepted a pass by Sooners quarterback Dillon Gabriel. And it gave Kansas the ball at the Oklahoma 47 yard line with just under seven minutes left in the third quarter.

Oklahoma turns turnover into points

Once again, the Sooners have made the Jayhawks pay for a turnover. This touchdown drive went 47 yards in nine plays and took 2:33 off of the clock. Oklahoma quarterback Dillon Gabriel ran it in from one yard out on a fourth down play at the goal line, and after the extra point the Sooners are up 42-21 with 10:16 left in the third quarter.

Jason Bean throws another interception

The Jayhawks had a chance to make this a one-score game to start the second half, if they could drive for a touchdown to open the third quarter. But Kansas quarterback Jason Bean threw his second interception of the game. Up 35-21 with just under 13 minutes left in the third quarter, Oklahoma took over with the ball at the Kansas 47 yard line.

END 2Q: Oklahoma 35, Kansas 21

Oklahoma drove the length of the field as the time left in the second quarter ticked down. The Sooners faced a decision, either to go for a field goal as time expired or try for a touchdown. They chose the former, and were stopped.

Kansas cuts into the Oklahoma lead

The Jayhawks seem to have some life again, and now trail just 35-21 with 1:36 left in the second quarter after a touchdown and the ensuing extra point. A long run by running back Devin Neal set up an 18-yard passing touchdown for quarterback Jason Bean to tight end Mason Fairchild. The drive went 75 yards in four plays and took 1:04 off of the clock.

Oklahoma scores again

The Sooners are now up 35-14 with 2:40 left in the second quarter. One play after a touchdown was taken away because of a holding call, running back Eric Gray ran the ball in from 21 yards out. That capped off a two-play drive that went 54 yards in 00:40.

Oklahoma extends its lead

The Sooners made the Jayhawks pay for that turnover, and drove down the field for another touchdown. This one came on a 24-yard pass from quarterback Dillon Gabriel to wide receiver Theo Wease, and the ensuing extra point made it a 28-14 score with 5:42 left in the second quarter. The drive lasted just 2:12 and went 65 yards in seven plays.

Jason Bean throws an interception

Kansas' defense was finally able to make Oklahoma punt the ball away, but on the ensuing drive the Jayhawks weren't able to capitalize. A great individual effort by Sooners cornerback C.J. Coldon led to an interception on a pass by Jayhawks quarterback Jason Bean. With 7:54 left in the second quarter and Oklahoma leading 21-14, the Sooners took over at their own 35 yard line.

Oklahoma drives for another score

The Sooners didn't even need a full minute for this scoring drive, and found the end zone on a six-yard run by Jovantae Barnes on a drive that went 80 yards in five plays and took 00:57 of of the clock. The extra point made it 21-14 with 14:26 left in the second quarter. Kansas' secondary is really, really struggling to do much of anything well right now.

END 1Q: Oklahoma 14, Kansas 14

Oklahoma fumbles the ball away, but Kansas doesn't take advantage of it

The Sooners have committed the first turnover of the game. Quarterback Dillon Gabriel seemed to lose control of the ball on an option run on his own, and Jayhawks defensive end Hayden Hatcher recovered it. It gave Kansas the ball at its own 41 yard line with 1:27 left in the first quarter.

However, the Jayhawks — which did have defensive end Lonnie Phelps Jr. in the game on that defensive drive — ended up punting the ball away after its offense couldn't move up the field. Quarterback Jason Bean should have been picked off. But the Oklahoma defender dropped the pass.

Kansas ties it back up

An 11-yard rushing touchdown from running back Devin Neal helped Kansas tie the score up at 14-14, with the ensuing extra point, with 2:39 left in the first quarter. That ended a nine-play and 65-yard drive that took 4:28 off of the clock. It's one that included a significant first-down conversion on third and long on a pass from quarterback Jason Bean to tight end Mason Fairchild, and another great decision on an option run by Bean that saw him toss it to wide receiver Quentin Skinner for a major gain.

Oklahoma gets the lead back

Once again, Oklahoma didn't waste much time moving the ball against Kansas' defense. The Sooners found the end zone again, this time on a two-yard rushing score by Eric Gray that capped off a nine-play and 75-yard drive that took 2:22 off of the clock. After the extra point, Oklahoma leads 14-7 with 7:13 left in the first quarter.

Something to watch moving forward will be Lonnie Phelps Jr.'s availability for Kansas. The defensive end, arguably one of the Jayhawks' best players to date this season, was standing on the sideline without his helmet during this drive. He wasn't in the defensive line rotation as he usually is.

Kansas drives to tie score on its opening drive

It may have seemed impossible that Jayhawks wide receiver Lawrence Arnold would come down with that catch, but he did and it gave Kansas its first touchdown of the game. With two defenders on him, Arnold caught a bobbled ball for a 39-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jason Bean. With the extra point, the six-play and 75-yard drive that took 2:39 off of the clock has Kansas tied 7-7 with Oklahoma with 9:35 left in the first quarter.

An offside on third down earlier in the drive gave Kansas a much more manageable distance on third down, and a pass from Bean to running back Torry Locklin converted. That was a momentum swing for the Jayhawks. Time will tell just how critical this drive ends up being.

Oklahoma drives for a touchdown on its opening drive

The Sooners made quick work of the Jayhawks' defense on this opening drive, and later found the end zone on a short rush by Jovantae Barnes. For most of the drive, the Sooners picked apart the Jayhawks through the air. After a 10-play and 79-yard drive that took 2:41 off of the clock, and the ensuing extra point, Oklahoma is up 7-0 with 12:14 left in the first quarter.

The coin toss

Kansas won the coin toss and chose to defer. It will be Oklahoma receiving the ball to start.

The scene about 10 minutes before kickoff

No surprises for Kansas' availability offensively or defensively

There are some updates that need to be made to the depth chart, but when it comes to who should be expected to be playing or at least available on Kansas' two-deep those players are going through warmups.
