No. 3 Mary Hardin-Baylor sends McMurry to season-ending ninth loss

BELTON - McMurry had some near misses during the 2022 football season but Saturday's game here was not one of them.

Mary Hardin-Baylor, ranked No. 3 nationally and the defending NCAA Division III champion, earned the automatic bid from the American Southwest Conference with a 62-3 win over the War Hawks,

The Cru is 12-0 vs. McMurry since 2007, and seven times has scored more than 60 points.

It was McMurry's third consecutive loss and ends the season at 1-9.

Mary Hardin-Baylor scored just 1:56 into the game and never looked back. Ahead 27-0 at half, the Cru added 35 more points in the second half.

McMurry avoided the shutout with 8:07 to go on a 39-yard field goal by Jared Mendoza. The score came after Kimani Smith intercepted backup quarterback Jackson Tingler and McMurry began at the Cru 22. Three plays, however, gained zero yards, bringing on Mendoza.

The War Hawks could must only eight first downs and 102 yards on offense. The Cru stopped the McMurry rushing attack cold, with the War Hawks minus-8 on the ground.

McMurry never made it to the red zone while the Cru was 8-for-8 inside the 20.

Mary Hardin-Baylor had 458 total yards despite having only a 9-second advantage in time of possession. The rush-pass totals were balanced - 235 rushing and 223 passing.

The Cru scored defensively on a fumble recovery in the War Hawks end zone and also on Chaka Watson 51 interception return in the third quarter.
