No. 3 Warriors sweep Keene State

May 5—KEENE, N.H. — Carley Stoker combined to go 5-for-9 with five runs scored and nine RBI while hitting three home runs Tuesday and was the winning pitcher in the opening game as the Eastern Connecticut State University softball team rolled to a Little East Conference doubleheader sweep over Keene State, 9-1 and 12-4.

Stoker hit a 3-run home run in the second inning of the opener while throwing a 2- hitter with five strikeouts over five innings as the Warriors (24-2 overall, 12-2 league) won the first game via the 8-run rule.

In Game 2, Stoker hit a 2-run home run in the first inning and added a solo shot in the sixth.

Alexis Tyrrell had five hits in the twinbill with five runs scored and three stolen bases for the Warriors.

Brooke Matyasovsky, who recorded the win in the circle in Game 2, had four hits, including a double and home run, scored four runs and had four RBI.

Matyasovsky, previously named the Little East's pitcher of the week earlier this season in Week 4, earned the conference's player of the week award after six of her seven hits went for extra-bases (3 homers, 3 doubles) in a split of four games.

Taylor Darby had three hits and three RBI for the Warriors against the Owls.

ECSU, ranked third nationally in Division III, closes out its Little East regular season on Saturday at home against UMass-Boston beginning at 1 p.m. at Clyde Washburne Field.

The Warriors need a sweep, combined with a loss by Southern Maine (25-2-1, 11-1) in at least one of its final four games — doubleheaders against Castleton University (Friday) and Plymouth State (Saturday) — to earn a share of the regular-season championship.

Eastern and Southern Maine split a Little East doubleheader last Sunday in Gorham, Maine.

MEN'S LACROSSE Warriors fall in tourney MANSFIELD — Eastern was held scoreless for over 29 minutes as No. 5 seed Plymouth State University advanced in the Little East Conference tournaemnt with a 10- 6 first- round victory Tuesday at Rick McCarthy Field.

Shane Haggerty scored twice for the Warriors, who finished their season with a 6-6 record.

Robert Porter made 19 saves for the Panthers (4-4), who trailed 4- 3 midway through the second quarter before scoring five unanswered goals to take an 8-4 lead with 10 minutes remaining in the game.

Jack Farrell made seven saves for Eastern in the last of his 37 career appearances (30 starts).

Plymouth State visits No. 1 seed UMass-Boston in the semifinals on Thursday at 7 p. m.
