No. 5 Class 6A Allen deals Abilene Wylie first loss in tennis at Plano West tournament

ALLEN − Allen, ranked No. 5 in the Texas Tennis Coaches Association’s Class 6A preseason poll, dealt Wylie its first loss of the season in the opening round of the Plano West Invitational on Friday in Allen.

Allen beat the Bulldogs, ranked No. 2 team in Class 5A, 10-4.

Wylie (8-1) bounced back to beat 6A No. 12 Coppell 12-7 in the first round of the consolation bracket in Coppell. The tournament continues Saturday.

Allen swept the boys singles matches and nearly made it clean sweep in boys doubles. But Connor Brown and Grant Bristow pulled out a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles.

Wylie won two girls doubles matches – Kate Delgado and Suhejla Qinami won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2, while Kindall Alford and Truleigh Conover won 6-0, 7-5 at No. 3. Stealey Crousen won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 girls singles.

Trevor Short, Brown and Bristow each won three-set matches in boys singles against Coppell, while Marshall McPherson won by default after leading 4-1, 1-0.

Short and McPherson also won at No. 1 boys doubles, while Brown and Bristow won at No. 2.

Crousen and Qinami won at Nos. 2 and 4 girls singles, as did Conover at No. 6. Carly Bontke won at No. 1, after her opponent defaulted leading 1-0 in the first set.

Delgado and Qinami pulled out a three-set win at No. 2 girls doubles, while Allford and Conover won at No. 3.

A day earlier, Wylie beat Frisco Heritage 18-1 in Frisco. Wylie beat No. 1 and defending Class 6A state champion Plano West on Aug. 5 in Plano.
