No. 6 Florida State completes sweep of No. 4 Clemson softball, steals home for go-ahead run

CLEMSON — The play that gave No. 6 Florida State the lead over No. 4 Clemson softball on Friday was a bizarre one.

In the top of the fifth inning, Florida State had tied the game on a sac fly. The next at-bat, with runners on second and third, right fielder Hallie Wacaser hit a short ground ball to Clemson shortstop Alia Logoleo. Logoleo threw out the lead runner at home plate for the second out. During the ensuing celebration, Florida State shortstop Josie Muffley, who had advanced to third on the fielder's choice, stole home.

She gave the Seminoles the 3-2 lead that would hold, and Florida State completed the sweep of Clemson at McWhorter Stadium.

Clemson almost had a chance to walk it off in the bottom of the seventh. Center fielder McKenzie Clark hit a two-out single with top hitter Valerie Cagle on deck. Florida State left fielder Kaley Mudge bobbled the ball, and Clark tried to take second base. The throw came in time for the final out.

The Tigers fell to 0-7 all-time against the Seminoles. It was Florida State's second straight sweep of Clemson after they won all three against the Tigers last season.

Clemson's bats stay cold

Clemson (37-4, 12-3 ACC) is one of the best hitting teams in the country and entered the weekend leading the ACC in all three major hitting categories: batting average (.350), slugging percentage (.598) and on-base percentage (44.4%).

But the Tigers struggled at the plate all weekend against Florida State (32-7, 11-1). They totaled nine hits in three games, including just two Friday. Clark had both of Clemson's hits in Game 3. The Tigers were a combined 0-for-30 with runners on base in the series.

Clemson capitalizes on errors

In Game 1 on Thursday, Clemson committed three costly errors. Five of Florida State's seven runs in the win were unearned thanks to the Tigers' mistakes. In Friday's finale, Clemson got a bit of revenge on the Seminoles.

The Tigers got on the board first in the first inning thanks to a Florida State error. Clark, who reached with a double, scored from second on a fielding error by Seminoles second baseman Devyn Flaherty.

After Florida State tied it up in the second, Clemson re-took the lead on another error in the fourth. Pinch-runner Julia Bomhardt scored from first on a throwing error by catcher Michaela Edenfield.

Florida State's walks

Florida State's hitters lead the ACC in walks with 165, an average of more than four per game. The Seminoles stuck to their strength Friday. Cagle dealt five walks, a career-high for the junior.

The walks were costly, too. The runner who scored Florida State's first run in the second reached on a two-out walk. In the fifth, Cagle issued two walks in a frame in which the Seminoles scored two runs to take the lead. During that inning, Clemson pitching coach Kyle Jamieson took issue with a called ball and was ejected.
