No additional charges for dad after 10-year-old dies after being abused

LAURENS, S.C. (WSPA) — There will be no additional charges for a man whose 10-year-old daughter died after being shaken at a young age.

We previously reported that Egypt Morales passed away on Tuesday as a result of being beaten into a coma by her father, Joseph Morales in February 2015 when she was just 18 months old.

He was convicted of child neglect from shaken baby syndrome which resulted in her serious brain injury in June of 2016.

Following Egypt Morales’ death, the Laurens Police Department reached out the Eight Judicial Circuit Solicitor’s Office to discuss additional charges against Joseph Morales.

However, according to SC Code of Law 16-3-5, individuals cannot be prosecuted for homicide if the injuries inflicted result in death at least three years later.

Therefore, the police department said they could not charge him with anything else.

The police department said it has spoken with the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office and a SLED representative to determine if anything was covered over the last nine years that may have contributed to her death. Doctors expected her to live into adulthood.

He is currently being held in the South Carolina Department of Corrections. He was sentenced to 18 years and is expected to be released on June 9, 2030.
