Flightsin Ukraine will not be resumed until it is 100% safe, Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council Secretary, Oleksiy Danilov, said on national television on Aug. 3.

"Until we are 100% sure it will be safe for people who will fly, we are unlikely to decide in its favor," Danilov said.

He noted, however, that in some countries everything works even during war – including civilian aviation.

The first thing Ukraine needs to resume civilian flights is F-16 fighter jets.

"We need to realize that all the facilities along all the routes civilian flights fly must be completely protected by air defense systems, it all must be closed. We have to be sure that it works," the National Security Secretary said.

He doesn't rule out some flights in western regions.

"Could it be Kyiv? We need to be very careful because we have a crazy neighbor," Danilov said.

Ryanair announced that the company is considering the possibility of resuming a limited number of flightsto Ukraine before the end of the year – once the European Aviation Safety Agency declares it safe enough to do so, Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary said on July 21.

Ukrainian national air traffic operator Ukraerorukh poured water on the idea, stating that Ukrainian airspace will remain closed until the skies are 100% safe.
