No comment, Cobb coaches say on prayer ruling

Jul. 7—Last week, the United States Supreme Court ruled in favor of Joseph Kennedy, a former assistant football coach at Bremerton High School in Washington.

The court ruled 6-3 in Kennedy v. Bremerton School District that Kennedy had a constitutional right to pray at the 50-yard line after his team's games. For some, the decision was seen as a victory for personal freedom and First Amendment rights. For others, it was seen as another chip away from the separation of church and state in public schools.

At the end of nearly every football game in Cobb County, players and coaches from both teams can be seen taking a knee and sharing in a post-game prayer, though not everyone participates.

While a common practice, when calls went out to approximately half of the county coaches, none that answered cared to comment on the decision. Others did not return calls.
