With No Fans In Stands, 1,300 Wisconsin Stadium Workers Laid Off

MILWAUKEE, WI — The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic in Wisconsin has had a ripple effect on two of the state's major sports franchises, after the owners of Sportservice announced more than 1,300 layoffs in July.

Delaware North Companies, Inc., which owns and operates Sportservice Milwaukee and Sportservice Green Bay, submitted a Mass Layoff Notice with the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development.

In the notice, Delaware North Companies, Inc. said workers at Lambeau Field in Green Bay and Miller Park in Milwaukee are affected. Lambeau Field is home to the Green Bay Packers and Miller Park is home of the Milwaukee Brewers.

"The pandemic has proved longer in duration and more devastating than anyone could have predicted," Eileen Morgan, Chief Human Resources Officer with the company said. "This was an unforeseen business circumstance that renders us unable to forecast the precise timeline for business to resume to a level sufficient to return all of our associates to work. Thus it is reasonably foreseeable that many associates will not return to work within six months."

The Brewers are scheduled to start their 2020 MLB season in late July, albeit without fans in the stands. The Packers begin with a home preseason game against the Arizona Cardinals on Aug. 15.

Among the 1,303 layoffs are: banquet servers, bartenders, cooks, dishwashers, hosts, food vendors, supervisors and others, stand attendants, porters and in-seat runners.
