No fooling, April 1 day to do some spring cleaning with household hazardous waste

Now that spring is officially here, it’s time to do some spring cleaning! And I’m talking about cleaning out your garages, sheds, basements, storage cabinets and finally (properly) getting rid of all those household chemicals that you’ve been storing for years.

Maybe you have a backyard pool, and it’s time for new pool treatments? Are you planning to use the newest paint colors? Pantone named “Viva Magenta” as its 2023 Color of the Year, but a quick Google search will clue you into many “colors of the year.” Dutch Boy, Valspar, Sherwin Williams, Benjamin Moore, Lowe’s, Glidden, Behr and PPG (hope I didn’t miss any) have all named a color of the year, so, it appears that what ever color you decide, someone has dubbed it “color of the year.”

Seems to me that it’s a way to market paint? But, in the spring, most of us really enjoy a fresh start and paint is a whole lot easier and economical than buying a new home! If you are on the paint kick, you probably need to dispose of the old colors, and we have just the thing for you!

April 1, 2023 (we aren’t fooling about this, though) at the Dallas Park, 220 Leisure Lane, Dallas, from 8 a.m. until 11:30 a.m., we will be holding our second Household Hazardous Waste Collection. We welcome all Gaston County residents to use this free service.

Keep in mind that this collection is for homeowners only, no businesses (small or large), no churches or schools can use this event. If you are any of the above, and need disposal options, please call me at 704-922-7729 and I can help find assistance.

As a reminder, we accept all household cleaners, polishes, varnishes, caulk, plumbing liquids, all aerosol cans (paint to pesticides to auto aerosols), pool chemicals, all types of toxic chemicals, pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, old gasoline, motor oil, antifreeze, brake and transmission fluids, fluorescent lamps, batteries (lead acid and rechargeable only, alkaline batteries can be put in your household trash) cooking oil, propane tanks, and of course both oil-based and latex paints. There will also be a medication drop off, look for a vehicle on the right-hand side of the road with a box for medication; there will be an officer and a gentleman there to assist!

To ensure that this drop off proceeds as efficiently as possible, help us help you: follow the road to the right at the fork; drive between the two rows of stables and you will see a large tractor trailer; we will have tables set up for your boxed materials, we will remove paint (no need to box) from your car, truck or trailer. Please refrain from helping and stay in your vehicle.

It can get dangerous if people leave their vehicles and can slow down this process. If possible, please box loose items so we can move them in one trip from your car. This is a free event, sponsored by Gaston County Solid Waste and Recycling and Controlled Substance Coalition. Our next collection will be Sept. 23, 2023. April 1 will also be the last day for Mulch Sales at the Yard Waste Facility, 3120 Philadelphia Church Road, Dallas.
