The supply of Taurus missiles to Ukraine will not lead to escalation between NATO and Russia, Ukraine's Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba assured the German government in an interview with Bild on Aug. 12.

"Ukraine needs Taurus missiles to save more lives of Ukrainian soldiers and civilians and to speed up the liberation of the territories and put an end to the war more quickly," Kuleba said.

Berlin's fears that the missiles will be used to attack targets beyond Ukrainian territory are groundless, the minister said.

"First, other partners have already delivered missiles with similar range. Second, no previous German decision to supply Ukraine with a new type of weapon has led to an escalation. On the contrary, German weapons have already saved many Ukrainian lives," he said.

Ukraine will not assault another country as it aims to protect its own land, Kuleba emphasized.

"We don't need a foreign state and we use missiles within our own borders exclusively in order to liberate what is rightfully ours according to the UN Charter and international legislation," he concluded.

Germany's ruling party greenlighted the supply of modified long-range Taurus missiles to Ukraine, according to media reports on Aug. 10.

Two prominent members of Germany’s Social Democratic Party, headed by Chancellor Olaf Scholz, advocate for Berlin to transfer over Taurus missiles to Ukraine, reported German newspaper Der Spiegel on Aug. 6.

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, however, reiterated on Aug. 3 that Germany would not send Taurus missiles to Ukraine, referring to the U.S. unwillingness to provide Kyiv with ATACMS missiles.

On July 26, the head of the Bundestag Committee on Defense Policy and a member of the Free Democratic Party, Marcus Faber, announced the need to provide the Defense Forces of Ukraine with Taurus long-range missiles.
