Russia can no longer expect to achieve its territorial war aims in Ukraine, such as capturing the Donetsk oblast, without conducting a large wave of mobilization, Deputy Chief of Estonia’s General Staff, Col. Mart Vendla, said at a press briefing on Aug. 18, reported by Estonian public broadcaster ERR.

According to him, for Russia to achieve any further success, a large wave of mobilization or a significant increase in the number of professional soldiers would likely be necessary.

“From a purely military point of view, Russian mobilization would be necessary to gain more combat capability, however, it would probably be a very unpopular move from an internal political perspective,” said Vendla.

He added that the Kremlin regime is still trying to get by without a new wave of mobilization. According to him, a large recruitment drive into was announced in March.

“Currently, it has been going on for some time, and the set goals are likely not being achieved, although the influx of contract soldiers is such that combat losses will be compensated,” Vendla concludes.

Earlier, Ukrainian Military Intelligence spokesman Andriy Yusov reported that a full-fledged mobilization campaign is still underway in Russia, with about 20,000 people being recruited into the Russian army each month.
