No Hinsdale D-181 Mask Debate — For Now

HINSDALE, IL — School District 188 in Hinsdale and Clarendon Hills on Thursday postponed its school board meeting to decide whether to keep the district's mask mandate.

The district set the meeting with the expectation that a state judge would knock down the mandate in 145 school districts, including District 181, which are the subject of a lawsuit.

In a mass email to residents, the district said it learned that the anticipated court ruling in the matter appears to be set for late next week. The district said it expected the court will shift the authority of pandemic mitigation measures from the state level to local school districts.

"District 181 has been at the forefront of providing a safe and healthy learning environment for its students and staff throughout this long COVID-19 crisis," it said in its statement Thursday. "(T)he District has worked hard to respect the rights of all persons concerned within the context and the limitations of its duties and obligations."

The district thanked residents for submitting written comments on the subject. It said they would be shared on its website on the date of the special board meeting on the mandate, whenever that may be.
