‘No illegal substance’ found in candy linked to illness of Fort Worth students, police say

Three students from a Fort Worth middle school became ill after eating candy and were taken to a local hospital Monday, officials said.

Rumors circulated online that the candy consumed by the Wedgwood Middle School students contained fentanyl. Fort Worth Independent School District officials and police said that wasn’t the case.

“The candy was found just to be candy,” said Fort Worth ISD spokesperson Cesar Padilla.

Padilla said to his knowledge no vape pens were connected with the incident, despite rumors on social media.

Police said the students’ reaction is believed to have been caused by some candy they all ate, but the candy “had no illegal substance in it.” Blood tests done on the students who felt sick also came back negative for any drugs.

Padilla said Wedgwood’s principal held a meeting with parents Tuesday to talk about overall safety issues. According to Padilla, the district discourages students from sharing candy and other food items because of the possibility of an allergic or other type of adverse reaction.

Eight middle school students in Granbury were hospitalized in December after eating candy. The candy was initially suspected to have been laced with narcotics, but testing in that case also showed no drugs were present.
