Maybe you don't like the look of a giant refrigerator in your kitchen; maybe you don't have the space for a full-sized refrigerator, or maybe you never store enough food to justify having such a big appliance. In any case, it's worth remembering that you're not limited to the usual refrigerator options, because there's another way: under-counter refrigerators.

The kitchen pictured above, designed by deVOL Kitchens, actually has two refrigerators (well, a refrigerator and a freezer), but you wouldn't know that by looking at it. The under-counter units flank the kitchen with one on the far right and one on the far left, cleverly disguised by paneling to match the rest of the cabinets. If that sounds like your dream kitchen, then going with an under-counter fridge system might be a smart move.

When you think of an under-counter fridge, you might be picturing a wine or beverage cooler, but those are a bit different. Beverage-specific refrigerators are the right temperature for keeping wine and drinks cold, but not necessarily always the right temperature to store food—you'll have to check on your specific desired beverage fridge to make sure. Some under-counter fridge options look like a beverage fridge with doors (like the Liebherr option below), but most under-counter refrigerators meant for food that you'll find on the market today are actually built-in refrigerator drawers—rather than opening a door or being able to see inside a glass panel, you'll just pull out a drawer.

These drawers are often adjustable temperature-wise, so you can store specific types of food in them, like meats, produce, or dairy. Plus, with individual drawers, you can really customize your refrigeration system to your needs. And while freestanding under-counter fridges are a harder to come by, they do exist—the KitchenAid option below is an example. If you're considering making the switch to an under-counter fridge, check out the options below from top brands, or check with your go-to appliance brand to see their offerings.
