No One Could Tell All the White Guys Apart on the Democratic Debate Stage

When 10 candidates—of the 20 total—participating in the first 2020 Democratic presidential debates filed onstage on Wednesday night, they were notable both in their sheer number and the fact that three white men among them were virtually indistinguishable from one another. Roughly, the field on night one of the debates in Miami included Elizabeth Warren, Beto O‘Rourke, Amy Klobuchar, That Guy, That Other Guy, and Wait, Who’s That Guy?

Google Image searches surely spiked. Perhaps name tags should have been distributed, as chyrons failed to illuminate the difference between a Tim Ryan, a Jay Inslee, and a John Delaney. To Twitter’s collective eye, they all looked vaguely alike, but also like people no one seemed to recognized.

Seriously, who were the mysterious trio of white males onstage? For future reference, Jay Inslee is the governor of Washington with a laser focus on climate change. He has silver hair and a square jaw and, notably, wore a—dotted? Speckled?—shirt that was considered borderline subversive by political debate standards.

Tim Ryan, who also has silvery hair, is an Ohio congressman who may be better recognized wearing his trusty backwards hat.

And The Other Guy—an official title now—is former Maryland congressman John Delaney.

But Wednesday night’s debate has already spawned a conspiracy theory: that these three men are actually just one person.
