There are no retirement homes for mosquitoes. They have a short lifespan and their end can be violent

We are itching to learn more about mosquitos. The Lee County Mosquito Control District website has posted a series of frequently asked questions about an insect that are a good meal for fish, dragonflies, and damselflies, among others, and a health concern for humans.

A selection of the the frequently asked questions on the Lee County website will be featured on news-press.com this week as the 2023 mosquito season begins to take off with increased rainfall. Mosquito larvae and pupae live in the water, so the more rain the merrier the mosquito population.

How long do mosquitoes live?

ANSWER: Mosquitoes are relatively fragile insects with an adult life span that typically lasts 3-6 weeks. The vast majority meets a violent end by serving as food for birds, dragonflies, and spiders; or is killed by the effects of wind, rain, or drought. Some mosquito species may persist in for as long as five months if environmental conditions are favorable.
