No, USC does not need more wide receivers in the transfer portal

Let’s be very clear about one thing: After the recruitment of Duce Robinson, USC and Lincoln Riley have addressed what was really the one remaining need on the offensive side of the ball. USC did lack an explosive, field-stretching tight end to provide yet one more elite weapon opposing defenses have to account for. USC has top-quality receivers, running backs, and offensive linemen surrounding Caleb Williams. People inside the program generally think the Trojans have built better offensive line depth at each of the five O-line positions.

It is true that with Kyle Ford, C.J. Williams, and Gary Bryant leaving, USC doesn’t have quite as much depth as it would prefer. However, we can see that all three of those players — Williams and Bryant in particular — knew that with Dorian Singer coming from Arizona and new recruits entering the roster, they weren’t going to get as many touches as they would have preferred. They left because there was a lot of talent in the receiver room.

Could USC use a few more receivers? Sure it could. The Trojans could use a few more offensive linemen. A few more of anything never hurts. However, let’s be real: The Trojans, if they loaded up even more at receiver or O-line, would be getting luxuries.

At defensive line and in the secondary, USC absolutely needs more bodies. The Trojans have arguably the very best offense — on paper — in the United States heading into 2023. They’re basically set. They could always use a little more, but they’re good, especially with Duce Robinson in the fold.

Defense is where all the genuine needs exist. We’re not talking about luxuries, but necessities. This is where USC must get transfer portal reinforcements. Let’s be very clear about that point.
