Will Byers has been a fan-favorite on Netflix’s hit series Stranger Things ever since he got stuck in the Upside Down in the first season. As we moved into the fourth season last year, the focus became more on his sexuality and self-discovery in reference to his feelings for his best friend, Mike Wheeler.

Noah Schnapp, the actor behind the character, has also caused quite a buzz in the news since publicly coming out on TikTok a few weeks ago. While promoting his vegan hazelnut cocoa spread, TBH, Schnapp sat down with Us Weekly to reflect on Will’s Stranger Things journey so far.

“I think it’s beautifully written,” he said. “They’ve [The Duffer Brothers] had this vision for a long time, which you can tell even from season 1 how they wrote it with his character and how he was bullied and being called a fairy and all the way up from season 1 up until now. They’ve had this storyline kind of in the works and I think their vision has been working really well.”

An emotional scene between Will and Mike broke everybody’s hearts when Will showed Mike the painting he’d drawn of him as a Knight with a shield made of a heart design. Even though he said Eleven made him do it, the scene became a catalyst for understanding Will’s character on a deeper level.

“I think the Mike and Will storyline is definitely one that fans have a love-hate relationship with and kind of wish for a happy ending, but who knows what will happen there,” said Schnapp. “And I just think in season 5, we’re all hoping that Will kind of fully embraces who he is and that we get to see that. And I think that’s the most important, at least for me.”

Finn Wolfhard, who plays Mike on the show, also said the Duffer Brothers were “trying to get every character to have their perfect ending.”

Season 5 will be the final season of Stranger Things and is set to start filming in summer 2023.
