Nomination papers available for April 25 Milton town election

MILTON − Nomination papers for the April 25 town election are available, Town Clerk Susan Galvin said.

Candidates must file the papers with the required number of certified signatures with the board of registrars by 5 p.m. March 7. Candidates for townwide office need at least 50 signatures, while those running for town meeting seats need at least 10 signatures from within their precinct to qualify for the ballot.

Town meeting candidates running for reelection must file written notice of their intention to seek reelection by 5 p.m. Feb. 28 to gain a spot on the ballot.

The office of town treasurer is on the ballot, but there is a chance that the winner may not serve the full one-year term.

After Town Treasurer James McAuliffe notified town officials of his intention to retire after 14 years in the job, the select board placed an article on the Feb. 13 special town meeting warrant to make the job an appointive, rather than an elected, position. The change has been recommended by the state Department of Revenue and the town's government study committee.

If the change is approved by the special town meeting and town election voters, the elected treasurer would only serve until one is appointed by Town Administrator Nicholas Milano. If the change is not approved, the elected treasurer would be able to serve out the term.

Two seats on the select board are on the ballot, with incumbent Richard Wells drawing papers for a third three-year term. Cindy Christiansen has also obtained papers for select board. Incumbent Arthur Doyle had not taken taken out papers to run for a second term as of Friday.

Two school committee seats are also on the ballot. Incumbents Ada Rosmarin and Elizabeth White had not taken out papers as of Friday. Bao Qiu was the first candidate to enter the race.

Roxanne Musto, who was elected to the select board last year, has obtained papers for reelection to the board of health.

Other offices on the ballot include two seats on the planning board, three seats on the board of library trustees and seats on the park commission, the board of assessors, the board of cemetery trustees and the housing authority.

All the offices carry three-year terms with the exception of the housing authority seat and one on the board of cemetery trustees, which are for five years. A second cemetery trustee seat, which is to fill a vacancy, is for two years.
