None hurt after multiple shots fired into sports complex in Chester County on Monday

Multiple shots were fired in a Chester County sports complex during games and practices on Monday evening, our partners at CN2 News report.

Luckily no one was hurt. Chester Youth Baseball and Softball League President Tonin Perrigan told CN2 News that shots were fired at the complex while games were taking place. Perrigan explained that she first heard two shots, then about a minute later, she says she heard between six and eight.

Perrigan also told CN2 News the shots were fired inside the complex, not on the field.

CN2 News learned that all games and practices have been canceled for the rest of the week as the complex works to ensure the safety of the kids.

A parent who was at the game during the incident remembered people piling into the dugout and some children even hiding under benches.

“All the kids and folks ran into the dugouts and stayed put. My wife and my three kids and everyone else piled in pretty tight. Some of the kids were under the benches including my youngest,” the parent told CN2 News, “I stood on the hill looking down to where the shot sounds came from to see what was going on. Then we were told to get in our cars a leave. Officers had gotten there and were looking through the tree line near the creek on the back side of the clubhouse.”

Caitlyn Burch told Terry that she witnessed the shooting. She is a coach for the Chester Youth Baseball Softball League and her niece plays for the team.

“You couldn’t tell if it was fireworks at first or if it was gunshots. Then a minute later, 6 to 8 more shots were heard,” Burch said.

She said some people started running while others tried to hide the children.

“Our umpires got all our kids into the dugouts. You then had adults that were you know you put the kids under the bleachers you have adults surrounding them on the bleachers,” Burch said explained.

Chester Dixie Youth Baseball and Softball League posted a response on Facebook announcing that the rest of the week’s practices and games will be canceled. The League also touched on how grateful they were that no one was hurt.

Channel 9′s Tina Terry spoke with Chester County Sheriff Max Dorsey about the incident Friday morning. He said he was very angry when he heard that shots had been fired near the complex.

“First of all, I was angry. I was angry because our community’s most vulnerable people were at that complex doing what they should be doing, Dorsey explained.

Dorsey said his office has been working with state law enforcement officers to find a suspect in connection with this case.

While he did not go into details, he did want to ensure the public that his office are working around the clock.

“Certainly it has brought a level of anxiety to our community members. And the purpose of this meeting is to convey that you’re gonna be safe,” Dorsey told Channel 9.
