A nonprofit will be set up to manage more than $1 million donated to Xiao Zhen Xie, the 75-year-old Chinese woman who fought back an attacker in San Francisco last month.

Xie used a wooden stick to beat back Steven Jenkins, 39, who punched her in the face unprovoked while she was waiting at the traffic light on Market Street.

Xie suffered injuries to her face and eye, but she did not require surgery and will not have any permanent damage.

To help his grandmother, John Chen set up a GoFundMe page, which has raised $1,000,360 as of this writing.

Xie previously vowed to donate all the funds “back to the Asian American community to combat racism.” A nonprofit will now oversee the process.

“With the decisions from lawyers, social workers, and CPA, all their advice combined together, we made a decision that the best way to help the Asian community with our funds is to set up a non-profit foundation,” Chen told KPIX 5. “We are in the process of making it right now.”

Whether Jenkins attacked Xie for being Asian remains unconfirmed. However, he was found to be the same man responsible for assaulting an 83-year-old Asian man earlier that day.

The victim, identified as Vietnamese American Ngoc Pham, also sustained minor injuries. A GoFundMe page set up on his behalf raised more than $280,000.

Xie is reportedly overwhelmed by the public’s support. She is now doing better physically and mentally, Chen said.
