Nonprofits: Days of Caring, the new Opportunity Fund and TimberKnolls Spirit Cove update

HENDERSONVILLE - United Way of Henderson County is hosting its annual Days of Caring on May 12-13, when more than 400 local volunteers will participate in 37 projects at 24 nonprofit locations throughout the county.

According to a news release, Days of Caring is an annual opportunity for volunteers to provide hands-on support by engaging in activities that range from sanding and painting, gardening and mulching, repair and maintenance, to collecting and sorting food donations for local pantries.

The event begins each day at 9 a.m. and will end at 3 p.m. on May 12 and at 7 p.m. on May 13.

Hendersonville's new Opportunity Fund being offered

The City of Hendersonville recently announced the new Downtown Hendersonville Opportunity Fund, which is an initiative aimed at supporting local entrepreneurs and small businesses in Hendersonville’s Main Street and Seventh Avenue Districts.

According to a news release, the Opportunity Fund is funded by a grant from the Dogwood Health Trust, and it the Fund was created in response to the needs of local small businesses and entrepreneurs in the area, particularly those who are interested in opening a business in the Main Street and Seventh Avenue Districts.

The program supports entrepreneurs at various stages of business - from idea to growth - by providing training, technical assistance and access to loan capital, the release said. It is a partnership with the City of HendersonvilleDowntown Program, Mountain BizWorks, Black Wall Street AVL and the Small Business Center at Blue Ridge Community College.

TimberKnolls Spirit Cove receives Petco Love grant

TimberKnolls Spirit Cove received a $1,500 grant from national nonprofit Petco Love to help the nonprofit continue its work, providing animal therapy services to local veterans and people in need.

Founded in 1999, Petco Love is a national nonprofit that has invested $330 million in adoption and other lifesaving efforts. It also helps find loving homes for pets in partnership with Petco and more than 4,000 organizations across North America, with 6.5 million pets adopted and counting.

TimberKnolls Spirit Cove is a nonprofit organization based in Western North Carolina that provides animal-assisted therapy to veterans, first responders, healthcare workers, teachers and people overcoming illness, trauma and substance abuse. According to the release, TimberKnolls Spirit Cove is the only national therapy animal organization that works primarily with giant breed, Newfoundland dogs who have a history of heroic actions.
