A nonstop flight to the Caribbean from RDU airport is set to resume this month

Bahamasair will resume its twice-weekly flights between the Triangle and the Bahamas on Nov. 12 and continue through the winter and spring.

Bahamasair, the national airline of the Bahamas, began flying between RDU and Freeport, the main city on Grand Bahama Island, on Nov. 17, 2022. The service was suspended Aug. 20, but the airline planned to bring it back when cooler weather inspired thoughts of warm beaches.

This time, the airline says it expects to end the flights for the summer on May 30, 2024. As before, the resumed flights will operate Thursdays and Sundays, taking about two hours each way.

From Freeport, Triangle travelers can continue on to Nassau, the nation’s capital, where they can catch connecting flights to 11 other airports in the Bahamas.

RDU is one of only five U.S. destinations for Bahamasair and the only one outside of Florida. Bahamian TV stations and other media came to RDU for the airline’s inaugural flight last fall, as did the director general of the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, Investments and Aviation.

Bahamasair is one of 16 airlines doing business at RDU, including Lufthansa, which begins daily flights to Frankfurt, Germany, in June.

The Bahamas is one of eight international destinations that airlines now serve from RDU, some of them seasonally. Others include four in Europe (Frankfurt, London, Paris and Reykjavik); two in Canada (Montreal and Toronto); and one in Mexico (Cancun).
