A new German bakery — the only one of its kind in San Francisco — has opened for business in NoPa. Called Hahdough, the new arrival is located at 1221 Fell St.
Hahdough comes from owner and baker Ha Do. Born in Vietnam and raised in Germany, Do moved to San Francisco more than a decade ago and has since made a name for herself as a baker, pedaling traditional German treats at local farmers markets.
Her new brick-and-mortar konditorei (German for "patisserie") has the distinction of being San Francisco's only German bakery, according to Eater San Francisco. Stop in for a wide selection of tortes (available by the slice) and other baked goods like German-style cheesecake, fresh-baked pretzels and jam-filled berliner doughnuts. Hahdough also offers coffee and espresso drinks.
With a four-star rating out of 12 reviews on Yelp so far, Hahdough has gotten a good response.
Hugh Y., who was among the first Yelpers to review the new spot on March 2, wrote, "The mocha mousse torte had a very thick and delicious layer of mocha mousse, not too light nor too dense. The thin layers of coffee sponge cake and brandy buttercream added another dimension and texture. We will definitely be back for more of these well-executed cakes."
Yelper Lori N. noted, "Everything tasted super fresh as if they were made just an hour before (baking is done off-site in Hayes Valley). If you want a solid sweet taste of Germany, minus the airfare, just check out Hahdough."
Swing on by to take a peek for yourself: Hahdough opens at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday-Sunday and stays open until it sells out for the day. (It's closed on Monday and Tuesday.)
