Nordonia, Highland bring home Suburban League girls golf titles

GIRLS GOLF

Suburban League Final Tournament

A gray, misty Wednesday at Brookledge Golf Club yielded two hunter green champions.

Nordonia won the fourth Suburban League tournament in the National Conference, and Highland won the American Conference. Both teams also claimed their respective conference overall championships with the win.

It was the Knights' first league title in girls golf since 2008. As Nordonia Athletic Director/Tournament Director Rob Eckenrode said, the competition was much stronger this year than in the old Northeast Ohio Conference Lake Division.

Nordonia won with team score of 323, finishing 12 strokes ahead of runner-up Hudson. Knights coach Greg Harris admitted he had trouble processing his team's accomplishment.

"This year is totally awesome," Harris said. "One of our goals this year has been to win the league. They did a great job adjusting to the conditions."

Nordonia was led by a familiar duo. Sophomore Julia Gulla won medalist honors with a two-over-par 73, taking the top spot as she had in the previous three league tournaments. Gulla was named National Conference Player of the Year.

Nordonia captain Christina Nagy finished just two strokes behind her young teammate to take second with a 75.

Hudson's Emmy Burling took third place with a 76, and Stow's Gabrielle Berlingieri (79) and North Royalton's Lizzy Grant (80) rounded out the top five.

There was drama in the National Conference, but Highland put an exclamation point on its American Conference season by winning with a score of 298.

The Hornets won all four conference tournaments, but ran away with the final tournament, finishing 59 strokes ahead of runner-up Aurora.

Hornets ace Isabella Goyette saved her best performance for last. The American Conference Player of the Year won medalist honors with a four-under-par score of 67. She was the only player to break par in either conference.

Highland took the top three spots in the American Conference. Paige McKendry shot an even-par 71, and Elizabeth Coleman shot a 77.

Aurora's Gracyn Vidovic also shot 77, and Kent Roosevelt's Madolyn Kost shot 79 to round out the top five.
