Nordstrom At Freehold Raceway Mall To Close Permanently

FREEHOLD, NJ —Nordstrom will close its Freehold Raceway Mall location, the company confirmed to Patch. The clothing store will shutter 16 locations across the county, the company announced Tuesday in a press release.

Nordstrom has not yet listed every store that will close. No other Nordstrom closures in New Jersey have been confirmed, according to Business Insider.

The Freehold store has offered curbside service during the new-coronavirus crisis, according to the company website.

More than half of Nordstrom's sales come through online purchases, and the coronavirus has made those purchases more prevalent, the company said.

Nordstrom sent Patch the following statement:

"Our goal is to best position ourselves to serve customers in each market where we operate. Because of the impacts COVID-19 has had on our business, we need to take a critical look at the physical footprint of our stores to determine which we will continue to operate. To respond to the impacts of COVID-19 and ensure we’re able to continue serving customers well into the future, we will be closing 16 of our fleet of full-line stores, including Nordstrom Freehold Raceway. We selected these 16 stores based on a variety of factors, including the unique needs of the market, the current state of our business and real estate agreements.

"We will not reopen these stores to the public and anticipate all 16 of these stores will be closed by August 2020. These types of decisions are never easy because we realize what this means for our employees. We’re committed to taking care of them as best we can, including providing support and resources through this transition."

A change.org petition to keep Freehold's Nordstrom open has more than 7,200 signatures as of Friday morning.

"I don't want to lose my job," said one of the signees.

"The Nordstrom in Freehold is a vital part of the community with a fabulous staff," said another. "Please don't close."

Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack have 13 locations in New Jersey, including a Nordstrom Rack in Eatontown, according to the company website.
