While traditional winter boots are going to keep you warm, they aren't always the most stylish.
Searching for the perfect pair of boots that looked cute, stood up against the elements and didn't break the bank started to make me feel like maybe I was looking for something that simply did not exist — until now.
The Sam Edelman Laguna Waterproof Chelsea Boot, available at Nordstrom (shop here in Canada, and here in the U.S.) ticked all the boxes with their weather protection and sleek silhouette, but it wasn't until I wore them during some of the coldest days yet that I really saw the beauty of these boots.
The lug sole and structured upper make these boots look both stylish and functional — exactly what I needed for my winter wardrobe.
The chunky lug sole gives these boots a utilitarian style that can be dressed both up and down for a timeless look. Made from waterproof leather, these boots can withstand even the most inclement weather to keep your feet warm and dry.
The stretchy gore insets give a moulded fit for an effortless look every single time. The 1.5" heel is completely comfortable thanks to the lug sole platform that also features treads to help navigate snowy, slippery sidewalks.
These Chelsea boots keep rain, snow and slush out with thanks to their taped and sealed seams.
As someone who is very picky with winter boots in general, I was skeptical when ordering these because I didn't think they could be as cute as the photos and also be functional. I was also concerned about the fit: I always find my 5'2" stature doesn't lend itself well to Chelsea boots.
When I unboxed these boots I quickly tried them on and was pleased to see that despite being a Chelsea boot, they had a taller silhouette, elongating my admittedly short legs. The chunky sole and heel add more height and, differing slightly from the classic Chelsea boot, these Sam Edelman iterations have a square toe box, adding to the utilitarian vibe.
While most reviews recommend sizing up due to the narrow fit, I think I could've definitely gotten away with my usual size. I decided to keep the half size up as I plan to wear these boots with thick socks and leggings during colder months.
The only con, in my opinion, are the pull tabs — they aren't quite big enough to properly use when pulling on your boots. That said, these boots are quite easy to get on and off so it's not a dealbreaker.
What others are saying
I'm not the only one who loves these boots — Nordstrom shoppers say they're "obsessed" with the stylish fit — and they do recommend sizing up, especially if you have wider feet.
"These boots are super comfortable and very stylish. Honestly I feel like a million bucks when I wear them. I will agree that sizing up a half size is a good idea if you have wider feet, deal with bunion issues or would like to wear thicker socks," shares one review.
"The heel is a bit tight as well, but not bothersome. I usually am between a 7.5 and an 8 and I'm glad I went the 8."
"I love these boots," adds another. "They are so comfortable and I love how they sit further up on the ankle."
"They look super cute with cropped jeans. I usually wear a size 7 but those were pretty snug and I want to be able to wear socks with them so I exchanged for a 7.5 and they fit perfect."
In terms of negatives around these boots, shoppers only have one main complaint that matches my own: the too-small pull tabs.
"The only thing that drives me slightly nuts about these boots is that the pull tabs in the front and back are there for fashion but not function. You can't actually fit your fingers in the pull tabs," says one shopper.
"That said, it's still relatively easy to put the boots on... but it would be easier if the pull tabs were bigger."
"I love these. They are so comfortable but can be difficult to take on and off because the tabs aren't big enough, but I promise they are totally worth it," shares another. "So happy I purchased them!"
These waterproof boots are not only cute and comfy, but they're actually warm enough to get you through the unpredictable winter months. However, shoppers do recommend you size up at least a half size, especially if you have wider feet.
