Police ID Norfolk man who died after his truck hit a parked tractor-trailer at Bowers Hill interchange

A Norfolk man died after driving his tractor-trailer off the highway and crashing into another tractor-trailer that was parked on the right shoulder on Interstate 664.

State police say Ricky M. Batten, 59, was traveling northbound on I-664 driving a 2019 Peterbilt tractor-trailer when he ran off the road and hit the back of a 2023 Freightliner. He died at the scene.

The driver of the Freightliner, Zion Redding of Indiana, had stopped on the closed right shoulder to sleep. Redding was charged with stopping and sleeping on the interstate, according to state police.

The crash occurred at approximately 11:34 a.m., about 500 feet north of Interstate 64 in Chesapeake. The eastbound lanes of I-64 were closed for several hours.
