Norfolk police arrest 2 in fatal shooting of 20-year-old woman outside apartment complex on W. Little Creek Road

A man and a woman were arrested Wednesday in connection with a fatal shooting in front of Norfolk apartment complex last week.

Arien Clinton, 21, and Quasia Sheppard, 21, have been charged with second-degree murder and use of a firearm for the killing of 20-year-old Stariyana Patterson. The pair were arrested in Norfolk without incident, police said.

On May 17, Norfolk police responded to a reported shooting around 4:10 p.m. in the 1400 block of W. Little Creek Road, near Parkwood Manor Apartments.

At the scene, police found Patterson suffering from a gunshot wound. She was pronounced dead as she lie at the entrance of an apartment building.

Police have not detailed a motive in the killing, but multiple neighbors told The Virginian-Pilot the day of the shooting that they heard yelling outside before an exchange of gunfire rang out.

“It was like 10 loud pops, and then 10 more loud pops,” said one neighbor, who asked to remain anonymous. “I did not recognize the sound at first — I have only heard guns in movies. But when I realized what it was, all I could think was that whoever was shooting, was shooting to kill.”

Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to call the anonymous crime line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
