Norfolk team to play in U.S. championship of Senior League World Series on Friday night

Norfolk’s Fleet Park Senior League baseball team will play for the United States championship Friday night.

Led by Maury High standouts like Jack Bonney, Derek Baker, Ethan Walker and John Stilwell, Fleet Park has outscored opponents 28-6 in three games this week at the Senior League World Series in Easley, South Carolina.

The Senior League is for players ages 13-16 and the tournament includes a United States bracket and International bracket. The winners will meet in the World Series final at 4 p.m. Saturday.

All games are being streamed on ESPN+.

Fleet Park will play in the 7:30 p.m. U.S. final against West University Little League (Texas), which defeated Vineland Little League (New Jersey) 7-4 in an elimination game Thursday.

Fleet Park, which represents the Southeast Region, has had little trouble disposing its opponents.

Against Hawaii’s Central East Maui, of the West Region, Bonney delivered four hits and five RBIs en route to a 12-2 romp in the opener.

Stilwell and Greenbrier Christian’s Dylan Wood tallied two RBIs apiece in a 10-3 win over Burbank American of Illinois, the Central Region champ.

Baker and Walker then drove in two runs apiece in the U.S. semifinal against West University in a 6-1 win.

Bonney leads the team with six RBIs, Baker and Wood have four apiece, while Walker, Stilwell and Daniel Smith each have three RBIs. Smith and Wood have each pitched 6.1 innings with eight strikeouts.
