Norsemen sports round-up: Will Bunn, Madison Geise place in top 15 at Drake Relays

Roland-Story had two athletes place in their respective events at the Drake Relays held last Thursday through Saturday at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.

The Norse boys track team also earned a victory at the Roland-Story Invitational April 28. The Roland-Story girls golf team placed second at the Roland-Story Invitational girls golf meet Friday at the Riverbend Golf Course in Story City and also defeated Clarion-Goldfield-Dows at home April 26 and won a quadrangular in Huxley April 25.

The Norse boys golf team competed in a home dual with Ogden and the Roland-Story girls track team took second at both the George Abell Relays in Jewell April 26 and the Gilbert Quad meet Friday at Gilbert.

Will Bunn, Madison Geise place for Roland-Story at Drake

Will Bunn placed 10th in the high school boys long jump and Madison Geise took 14th in the girls discus at the Drake Relays.

Bunn jumped 21 feet, 1.75 inches on his second attempt to tie Bellevue's Alex Pitts for 10th, just missing the finals by two spots. Southeast Polk's Abu Sama won the event with a jump of 23-11.

Geise peaked with a throw of 116-5 on her second throw. She fell just over 5 feet shy of placing.

English Valleys Kennedy Axmear won the girls discus with a throw of 131-6.

Roland-Story also competed in the boys and girls 4x100 prelims Saturday.

The boys 4x100 team of Bunn, Nate Johnson, Gavin Carpenter and Eli Thorson clocked in at 43.93 to place 24th. The girls team of Adalyn Sporleder, Kennedy Petersen, Mackenzie Crutchfield and Kamryn Lande placed 64th in 52.06.

Girls shoot well at home tournament

The Roland-Story girls golf team shot a 376 over 18 holes at the Riverbend Golf Course Friday to easily beat North Polk (443) and Bondurant-Farrar (499) for second place behind defending 3A state champion Gilbert (350) at its home tournament.

Mackenna Carlson and Ellie Erickson both carded an 83 to lead Roland-Story. Mersadie Franklin finished with a 99 and Gabriella Wakefield a 111 to round out the scoring for the Norse.

The Roland-Story girls thumped Clarion-Goldfield-Dows, 184-232, over nine holes at a home dual April 26 at Riverbend.

Carlson won medalist with a 41. Erickson was medalist runner-up with a 43, Franklin took third with a 45 and Grace Corcoran was fifth with a 55.

The Norse girls shot a 182 over nine holes at the Ballard quad dual to beat Winterset by 15 strokes for the victory at the Ballard Golf and Country Club.

Carlson was medalist runner-up at Huxley with a 41. Erickson took third with a 42, Franklin tied for fourth with a 47 and Abby Cook came in ninth with a 52.

No scoring was available for the boys meets during the week.

R-S boys dominate home track meet

The Roland-Story boys scored 169 points at the Norsemen Invite to easily beat Aplington-Parkersburg's 96 points for the team championship.

Nate Johnson and Sam Knoll went first and second in the long jump for Roland-Story with respective jumps of 19-2 and 19-0.25. Kale Lande edged Ballard's Jameson Witt, 52.12 seconds to 52.64, in winning the open 400, Nathan Limas took the 3,200 in 10:48.93 and Roland-Story won six relay events.

Johnson, Bunn, Carpenter and Thorson ran a 43.82 time in the 4x100 to beat Nevada's 4:44 for the win. Jonovan Wilkinson joined Thorson, Johnson and Carpenter in winning the 4x200 with a 1:31.50 showing, easily beating Greene County's 1:34.29.

Lande, Wilkinson, Hesston Johnson and Carpenter grabbed gold in the 4x400 with a time of 3:34.86, topping Ballard 3:39.17 for the win. Johnson, Colin Streit, Wilkinson and Carpenter won the sprint medley in 1:38.06 and Luke Patton, Matthew Phelan, Carter Loof and Quin Ante took first in the shuttle hurdle with a 1:09.35 showing.

In the 4x800 Lande, Ben Greenfield, Johnson and Cade Diehl won in 8:52.75.

R-S girls take second at Abell Relays

The Roland-Story girls track team took second at the George Abell Relays with 136 points. South Hamilton won with 146.

Lauryn Kilstofte won the 800 in 2:31.09, Claire Truesdell took first in the 1,500 with a time of 5:28.80, Adalyn Sporleder won the long jump with a 16-3.75 effort and Macy Friest threw 37-9 in the shot put to earn a gold medal.

The Roland-Story girls took first in the 4x100, 4x400 and sprint medley relays. Sporleder, Petersen, Crutchfield and Lande clocked in at 52.64 in the 4x100, Madi Bauer, Mary Britten, Lande and Kilstofte won the 4x400 in 4:23.42 and Reagan Faber teamed with Sporleder, Faber and Lande to win the sprint medley in 1:52.59.

At the Gilbert quad meet Lande won the 100 (13.69), Kilstofte the 800 (2:33.58), Geise the discus (112-8) and Friest the shot put (34-10).
