North Arlington moped driver critically injured in Kearny hit-and-run crash

A North Arlington man was seriously injured in a hit-and-run crash while riding a moped in Kearny on Sunday night, authorities said.

Kearny police responded to the area of Harrison and Bergen avenues on a report of a moped operator struck by a cargo van around 10:15 p.m. Sunday, the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office said.

The 67-year-old victim, whose name was not released, suffered life-threatening injuries and was rushed to University Hospital in Newark. He was later transferred to Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, where he remained in critical condition Monday afternoon.

The driver of the van left the scene, but the vehicle was later recovered not far away, the prosecutor said.

The crash is under investigation by the Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit and the Kearny Police Department. Authorities urged anyone with information to contact the Hudson County Prosecutor at 201-915-1345 or leave an anonymous tip at hcpo.org/homicide-tip.
