North Augusta man sentenced to more than 15 years for jail stabbing

A 19-year-old North Augusta man was found guilty Tuesday of beating and shanking another inmate at the Charles B. Webster Detention Center in Augusta.

Jahden Lewis was convicted of aggravated assault and unlawful acts of violence in a penal institution. Judge Ashley Wright sentenced Lewis to 15 years in prison, followed by five years of probation.

On April 9, Lewis was part of a 3-on-1 attack on a 32-year-old inmate, according to a news release from the Augusta District Attorney's Office.

The suspects attempted to beat and shank the victim, who used his own shank to protect himself, according to the release. A deputy tried to break up the fight and the victim was tased.

Lewis sustained multiple shank wounds during the attack, according to the release.

Lewis has pending armed robbery and entering automobile charges in Columbia County, according to the release. He will await those charges in jail.

The two other suspects in the assault have upcoming trials.
