NORTH CANTON − About 17 firefighters Wednesday morning responded to a report of a fire in a three-story apartment complex at 201 Rose Lane SW, the city fire department said.

No one was reported hurt as a result of the blaze reported around 10:17 a.m. Police officers arrived first and saw smoke coming from a first floor apartment. Firefighters helped residents of the surrounding apartments to evacuate, the fire department said. Firefighters tried to determine if anyone was in the apartment with the fire.

They later discovered that Apartment 101, from which smoke and flames were coming out through a window, was vacant after the tenants had been recently evicted.

Firefighters entered and found the fire in a back bedroom. The fire was out by 10:30 a.m. The fire did not spread beyond the bedroom, the fire department said. But smoke and heat had damaged the rest of that apartment.

The city fire department's Fire Prevention Bureau with the help of the state fire marshal's office is trying to determine what caused the fire and is interviewing witnesses. The department estimates the damage to be $75,000 to the structure and $5,000 to contents. Cornerstone Managed Properties owns and manages the rental property, the department said.
