Jackson boys tennis earns state berths
AKRON — The Jackson boys tennis team will have one singles player and a doubles team competing in next week’s Division I state tournament in Mason.
Alvin Altman advanced to the singles semifinals in Thursday’s district tournament at Springdale Athletic Club. The doubles team of Ryan Kelley and Lucas Kelley also won a pair of matches on its way to a state berth.
After losing his second-round match, GlenOak freshman Dylan Wiles will try to earn a state berth in Saturday’s play-in round. He will face Highland’s Elijah Hadler.

Walsh baseball wins NCAA Tournament debut
DETROIT — Austin Marko’s two-run homer capped a five-run eighth inning as seventh-seeded Walsh rallied to beat No. 2 Wayne State 6-3 on Thursday in the first round of the NCAA Division II Baseball Tournament.
In their first NCAA appearance in program history, the Cavaliers came from behind on the strength of four extra-base hits in the eighth. Shea Simmer, Matt McGrath and Joey Holinga opened the inning with three straight doubles.
Jarret Lyon also homered and doubled for Walsh, which faces Illinois-Springfield on Friday at 2:45 p.m. in a winner’s bracket game. Winning pitcher Brant Alazaus (7-1) scattered six hits over seven innings and struck out 10. Cole Brogan threw two scoreless innings of relief.
