North Canton school board accepts Treasurer Todd Tolson's retirement, hires new one

North Canton Board of Education

Wednesday meeting

KEY ACTION: The board accepted the resignation of longtime treasurer Todd Tolson, effective Jan. 1. He has been with the district for over 20 years.

He started his career with the Ohio Auditor’s Office for four years. Tolson then worked with R.G. Drage Career Center for two years. Next, he worked for Stark Portage Area Computer Consortium (SPARCC) for four years before starting at North Canton City Schools in 2003.

During his tenure at North Canton City Schools, the district negotiated 12 contracts, passed five levies and graduated thousands of students. The district received numerous state awards for clean audits and financial record management.

He is a proud graduate of the district and his two children also graduated from Hoover High. Tolson refers to himself as a “Viking by birth and a Viking for life.”

Tolson said after leaving the district, he will be working at the Stark County Schools’ Council of Governments, working with and mentoring other district treasurers.

“Todd’s record with the district has been impeccable as has his work ethic,” board President Robert Roden said. “We thank him for his work and for giving us ample time to find his replacement who has been working with the district for the past seven years.”

The board also voted to employ Tim Walker as the new treasurer effective Jan. 1. Walker will resign from his current position as director of development and special projects.

The district released a statement that it “conducted a targeted search to fill the Treasurer role vacated by Tolson’s retirement. With NCCS since 2016, Walker is a natural fit for the job given his experience within the district and management of the current $60 million North Canton Primary and North Canton Intermediate construction project.”

Walker holds a bachelor's degree in finance, a master’s degree in sports science and a state school treasurer license.

“I am very grateful to the Board of Education for allowing me the opportunity to serve in this capacity,” Walker said in a statement. “Todd Tolson has done a tremendous job as the treasurer and I look forward to his continued mentorship as we make the transition.”

Superintendent Jeff Wendorf said Walker’s contract had not been finalized. "We have until January to finish it, so his salary is unavailable at this time,” he said.
