This North Carolina city again ranks among nation’s best-run places. Here’s why

A North Carolina city was named one of the best-run in the nation — again.

Durham ranks No. 10 on this year’s list of places where leaders are most effective at providing services and using public money, according to the personal finance website WalletHub.

The most-recent rankings mark a drop from 2021, when Durham was No. 7 in the nation. Still, the Bull City has earned top 10 spots on the list each year since 2018, results show.

Similar to last year, Durham received national recognition after WalletHub said it considered “150 of the most populated cities” across the United States.

Using data from the federal government and other resources, analysts weighed each place’s per capita budget. The money spent on residents was compared to the “quality of city services,” a measure of six categories: health, safety, financial stability, education, economy and infrastructure and pollution, according to figures published on Tuesday, June 21.

For another year, Durham received one of the highest scores for budgeting, landing in the No. 11 spot overall.

But the Bull City was further down on the list for “quality of city services,” earning health and safety scores that were about average. It was also one of the lowest-ranking cities for infrastructure and pollution, a category that weighed traffic congestion, public transportation, bike paths and environmental factors impacting people who live there.

One bright spot was financial stability, which earned Durham among the highest city services scores in the nation. That category considered debt and credit ratings in the area, results show.

While Durham continued to make it into the top 10, some other North Carolina cities weren’t far behind on WalletHub’s list.

Raleigh stood at No. 13, while Greensboro was No. 27. Also making the rankings was Charlotte, which landed at No. 112.

The nation’s top-ranking city was Nampa, Idaho, roughly 20 miles west of Boise, which took the No. 2 spot. The city determined to be the worst at using its resources was Washington, D.C., McClatchy News reported.
