PROVIDENCE — A 51-year-old North Carolina man was held in custody Monday after he was accused of pulling out a gun at a Mother's Day party and shooting a 44-year-old Providence man.

Louis Sepulveda allegedly shot Angel Rodriguez at about 11 p.m. Sunday during an argument about a guest he brought to the Manton Avenue home, said Providence police Detective Maj. David Lapatin.

The two men involved in the homicide — the city's fifth this year — were not related to each other, Lapatin said.

Sepulveda and his guest, another man, drove away from the scene on the 900 block of Manton Avenue and were on Interstate 95, near the highway's junction with Route 4, when state police pulled them over.

Sepulveda, who has a previous record, was arrested without incident, Lapatin said.

Rodriguez was taken to Rhode Island Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Sepulveda is charged with first-degree murder, possession of a firearm with no license, possession of a firearm after being convicted of a crime of violence, using a firearm while committing a crime of violence and discharging a firearm in a compact area.

Lapatin said he was held without bail.
