North Carolina transfer Kerwin Walton elects to join Texas Tech men's basketball

Mark Adams may have rounded out his men's basketball roster.

The second-year Texas Tech coach nabbed the verbal commitment of North Carolina transfer Kerwin Walton, who chose the Red Raiders as his new home Monday. He is expected to have three years of eligibility remaining.

Last week, Walton narrowed down his listed of schools to Clemson, Kansas State, Memphis, Oklahoma and Texas Tech.

Walton, listed as a 6-foot-5 forward with the Tar Heels, hails from Hopkins, Minnesota. Back in high school, he was rated the No. 23 shooting guard in the country, according to 247Sports composite rankings, before choosing North Carolina over Arizona, Arkansas, Baylor, Kansas, Ohio State, Texas and several other programs.

As a freshman with the Tar Heels, Walton developed into a player then-head coach Roy Williams valued on the floor due to his 3-point shooting prowess. He made 50 3-pointers, while making 42% of those attempts in 20 starts.

A year later, he turned into a player who first-year coach Hubert Davis could not rely on due to his struggles on the defensive side. His lack of playing time led to the decision to transfer.

The decision followed a run in which North Carolina advanced to the national championship, falling to Kansas last season. Walton appeared in two NCAA Tournament games, totaling four minutes.
