Comedians from New York City will entertain audiences at the "Forks Comedy Fest" on Saturday, Aug. 27, at The Spud Jr. in East Grand Forks.

John Kennedy, Bryan Vogt-Nilsen, Leo Cofresi and Derek Drescher, all New Yorkers, and a couple of other comedians, are scheduled to perform, said Justin LaRocque, owner of The Spud Jr. and the event organizer. They will perform in the restaurant's Prohibition Comedy Room at the restaurant, 302 DeMers Ave.

The shows begin at 7:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.

The audience can expect to see three comedians per show and there will be two different shows on the same night, said LaRocque, who's been running the comedy series at The Spud Jr. for a little more than a year.

He's received "a lot of good feedback" from the public on the shows, he said, and he's hoping that audiences will grow as word gets around.

A collection of artwork by women artists in northwest Minnesota is on exhibit through Sept. 28 at the Northwest Minnesota Arts Council Gallery at Northland Community and Technical College, 1101 State Highway 1, in Thief River Falls.

An artist reception is planned for 5-7 p.m. Sept. 28. The exhibit is titled "Dynamic Voices: A Collection of Work by Women Artists of Northwest Minnesota." Many of the art pieces are for sale.

Artists include Connie Nelson and Rachel Gustafson, both of Hallock; Therese Jacobson, Alvarado; Heidi Danos, Fosston; and Stephanie Olson, Thief River Falls. All are well-known artists in the region, said Mara Hanel, NWMAC director. They have exhibited in past NWMAC exhibits, received awards and grants for their art, participated in past workshops, and served on the council's board.

Each of the women artists featured in the Dynamic Voices exhibit "have their own distinctive style and message," said Trey Everett, the council's showcase specialist. "You will experience artwork that is provocative, touching, lighthearted and mysterious."

More than 6,100 people attended the "Sound of Music," the production by Frost Fire Summer Theatre, making it the largest audience the theater company has seen in many years, according to David Paukert, theater manager.

The amphitheater, located seven miles west of Walhalla, N.D., staged "Sound of Music" for the third time in its 38-year history. This year's show featured Misti Koop, of East Grand Forks, in the leading role "Maria" for the second time.

In the past year, the theater company also advanced its "Center Stage" campaign to raise funds to install new supports and a new stage floor in the theater — necessary renovations that "have been long overdue," Paukert said.

Patrons have contributed $42,000 toward the $50,000 goal, he said. Even though the goal has not quite been reached, demolition and rebuilding of the stage is set to begin this September.

Those who wish to support the project may send contributions to: Frost Fire Summer Theater, P.O. Box 888, Walhalla, N.D. 58282. For more information, go to
