North Davidson football coach Brian Flynn suspended four games for NCHSAA violations

North Davidson coach Brian Flynn will not lead the Black Knights in the first four games of the 2022 high school football season after he was suspended by the N.C. High School Athletic Association.

Davidson County athletic director Mike Lawson confirmed Wednesday that Flynn cannot participate in games until the team’s Sept. 16 home contest against Asheville. Mid-Piedmont Conference play begins Sept. 30.

Lawson said that details of the suspension are considered a personnel matter by the county and could not comment further. The NCHSAA does not comment on violations or penalty information decided by the association, leaving that matter to individual schools or districts, according to James Alverson, the NCHSAA assistant commissioner for media relations.

Flynn has been the coach at North Davidson since 2017 and is coming off back-to-back conference titles. The Knights went 8-4 last season and swept through the new Mid-Piedmont 3A league. In five seasons, he has an overall record of 49-17, including a trip to the 2018 Class 2AA state championship game.

Flynn succeeded Mark Holcomb, now the coach at Oak Grove. They, and county rival Ledford, all play in the same conference, and among them have won the past five titles in the old Central Carolina 2A and current Mid-Piedmont.
