North East man facing attempted homicide in Labor Day stabbing that critically hurt victim

NORTH EAST — An altercation at a borough apartment early Monday morning led to a stabbing that critically injured a 37-year-old man.

Within an hour, police had apprehended the suspect, according to North East Police.

Michael A. Desantis Jr., 27, of North East, is facing charges including attempted homicide and aggravated assault in the stabbing, which was reported on Monday at about 1:20 a.m. in the area of 60 Clinton Street, according to police.

The victim, a 37-year-old North East resident whose name is not being released, was taken by ambulance to the hospital and was last reported in critical condition, police reported Tuesday.

According to investigators, officers who responded to Clinton Street to investigate a reported stabbing found the victim on the sidewalk with a stab wound to the neck. A witness said Desantis arrived at an apartment in the area, engaged in a verbal and physical altercation with the victim, then stabbed the victim in the throat before fleeing, police reported.

Police apprehended Desantis in North East. He was later arraigned by Greene Township District Judge Susan Strohmeyer on charges of attempted homicide, aggravated assault, possessing instruments of crime and simple assault.

Strohmeyer set bond at $100,000.

Desantis is tentatively scheduled to appear in court for his preliminary hearing on Sept. 14 before North East District Judge Scott Hammer, according to information in his online court docket sheet.
