North Fort Myers man, 78, killed in Bayshore Road crash; hit standing outside his pickup

A 78-year-old North Fort Myers man died in a two-vehicle crash Wednesday night that shut down Bayshore Road at Washington Drive.

The Florida Highway Patrol said a sport utility vehicle driven by a 37-year-old North Fort Myers woman was eastbound on Bayshore Road shortly after 9 p.m.

The North Fort Myers man, driving a pickup, was stopped in the eastbound lanes of Bayshore, west of Washington, and was standing outside his vehicle.

The front of the SUV hit with the back of the pickup and the North Fort Myers man. He was taken to Lee Memorial Hospital with serious injuries and later died.

The driver of the SUV was taken to Lee Memorial Hospital with minor injuries. A 2-year-old female passenger in the SUV was not hurt.

The crash remains under investigation.

The death is at least the 71st fatality on Lee County roads in 2022 according to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.
