North Hill language and cultural academy to host fundraising event. Here are the details

Akron’s North Hill neighborhood will be the setting for the Himalayan Arts Language & Cultural Academy's (HALCA) latest fundraiser.

Family-friendly activities and entertainment, such as live music and African drumming, will be featured throughout the event. Free food will also be available for attendees.

The event will be held at Out of the Box Academy, located at 1011 Gorge Blvd in Akron, from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 8. Tickets are $30 per person or $115 for five people.

HALCA has recently faced some financial difficulties that have made it challenging for the organization to operate consistently and smoothly, according to its flyer. The fundraiser's goal is to assuage some of those monetary issues.

Former Bhutanese refugee Puspa Gajmer founded HALCA in 2016. Initially, Gajmer hired instructors to give lessons on music and dance to children in the community. Now, those who attend the school learn music theory, piano, guitar, dance and Eastern instruments such as the tabla and harmonium. Reading and writing classes also are available, as is legal consultation by the school’s lawyers.

Gajmer is also the organizer for Akron's annual North Hill Music Festival, which aims to bridge cultural gaps between the communities within the area.
