North Jersey schools announce early dismissals for Thursday, Sept. 7 due to heat

The post-Labor Day heat wave has forced some North Jersey school districts to alter their plans for the first week of school.

There is a heat advisory in effect for most of North Jersey until 8 p.m. on Thursday with temperatures expected to hit the mid-90s. The NWS warns that "hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses to occur." Also, Friday's forecast calls for temperatures in the high 80s.

There is no uniform start to school in New Jersey. Some districts, like River Dell, began on Tuesday, while Passaic does not welcome students back until Thursday. Also, some North Jersey districts open the school year with single-session, abbreviated days as part of the academic calendar.
